I joined Cunard in 1946 as a Junior Assistant Purser serving on the old Aquitania carrying the GI Brides to America. Transferred to the post war maiden voyage of the Queen Mary July, 1947, to the First Class Purser's Office. Climbing the promotion ladder through the years to Chief Purser and often Cruise Director when required to wear that hat by the Company. Served on most of the Cunarders, but mainly on the Queens. For the last year of the Queen Mary under the Cunard houseflag as her Cruise Director. Including her final voyage with Captain Treasure Jones before her leaving for Long Beach.
I wish to send you my personal thanks for your work with the Association, which must be very time consuming. It is a very unique organization and I hope will continue to thrive for many more years keeping alive the camaraderie amongst those who served on their beloved Queen Mary. I wish you well on your trip next year to the ship. |

Hi
I was lucky enough to travel on the ship in 1967 at the age of 6. I have two questions which I would be grateful to receive replies:
Our cabin was D53 - have managed to buy a 1960'sdeck plan and the cabin' s not shown but it is in the 1967price list. Does anyone know where it was?
Our table (130 was in the forward restaurant - the plan only shows two restaurant, which would make the forward restaurant the first class one. However the card suggests two sittings, would it have been the old tourist class restaurant (not on plan?)
Many thanks |

I'm Currently a Crew member on board the Great Queen Mary in Long Beach California. I work at the front desk of what used to be the First Class Purser's Desk. I have always had a great deal of respect for her and I'm truly glad to see so many people touched by her story. I love hearing what folks have to say when they return after so many years, weather they were a former crew member or passenger. I always tell my guest's "IF THE WALLS HERE COULD TALK".... Hope to see some of you aboard very soon, take care and God Bless !!!! |

Hello, My Dad served on the Mary in '67. He was ship's carpenter on 6 of the final voyages (not the last). I actually have the brass plaque from his mess on my old bedroom door. It reads 'CARPENTERS' MESS', which is now my company's name - with the addition of media on the end. We are working on a project about the birth of Rock'n'Roll and the rise of the teenager in the South of England which as I'm sure you know, was heavily influenced by the merchant seamen pouring through Dock Gate 4. I am keen to hear from anyone who might be able to provide any archive or oral evidence that might help us tell our story. I can be contacted at david [at] carpentersmess [dot] com
It would be great to hear from you. |

How good to see "the Mary" here....My parents met whilst both working on this beautiful ship. My mother, Betty Dufour, was a Stewardess, and my father Stan Warner was initially a Waiter/Barman and probably ended up doing something else...he went on to working on the Mauretania, Franconia, and then Ferrys, all out of Southampton.
I have so many names that I heard as a child still in my head, and for me, the most enigmatic sound in the world, is the Queen Marys Foghorn......always a thrill as I stood, bright eyed on the Dockside at Southampton, and hearing the haunting and deep melancholy sound of this wonderful lady bringing my Daddy back home!
So much to remember, and so much to be grateful for. Remembering my beloved parents always. |

My father, Teddy Chdwick made the maiden voyage on the Queen Mary and I was to join her as a hairdresser in 1955, where many of my Dad's old shopmates made themselves know, which was a thrill. I spent five happy years working aboard before being sent to the Mauritania for three years, when I left to get married. Happy happy days |

I joined the Queen Mary (my 6th
ship & 2nd Cunarder) on 28/5/57
as a Commis Waiter within the First
Class Restaurant. My cabin was a 10
berth in the bows on D deck, and
you knew all about it when she
dipped and rolled.
I paid off after 12 voyages on
5/12/57. I was back on board
the QM again on 20/3/58 this
time as Asst Steward and paid
off in New York 7/4/58 to join
the Mauretania which I stayed
with until 17/3/59, I paid off
the 'Maurie' in New York to join
the Queen Elizabeth. Back on board
the QM again 6/10/59 as Pantryman
and paid off 1/12/59 to join the
Caronia. The QM was a fine ship
which I put down as the 8th Wonder
of the World, a very happy ship
and although I sailed on many other
liners, she undoubtly stood out from
the rest.
This was the time when the British
Merchant Navy ruled the world and
Britain built the finest ships the
likes of which we will never see again.
If you go aboard the QM2 check out Deck2,
Forward, Port Side, Frame 129. Then
once you have seen that go aboard
the Queen Victoria have a look at
Cunardia Interactive under A Queens Day
section in At Your Service, and at the
same time pop down to the Cunard Yanks
Section.

I am very enthused about your organization. I am wondering if you have additional photos of the Queen Mary arriving in New York on her maiden voyage? I would be very interested to know and to learn how I might access them.
Congratulations on your excellent organization. |

What a wonderful website and a grand tribute to Mary and her crew. I worked aboard Mary in the 1980's and fell hopeless in love with her. Cunard may continue to build liners with the name of Mary attached to them but there is only one RMS Queen Mary! |

A great site and monument to days past, as a "family" member in the 50s/60s, to me the site helps to portray what life was like in that period with the dear old "Mary", and the feelings of those that were a part of it.
Thanks to all the committee members for bringing this to life. |
